Ever wondered what it is like to live on a houseboat? Our stay aboard Volda Floating Home directly on a norwegian fjord was such a cool experience! Originally a 1962 ferry, this beautifully restored vessel has been transformed into a modern, spacious retreat with clean Scandinavian design influences. Each night we watched the aurora dance across the sky, and we spotted wildlife including otters, birds, fish, and reindeer! Top choice for nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and anyone craving a unique fjordside escape.

The main floor features three bedrooms,  communal living areas, a fireplace, and a laundry room. Upstairs, there’s an additional bedroom with a sitting area and access to a private deck with a hot tub. Below deck, you’ll find extra sleeping quarters with bunk beds. The host was warm, welcoming, and incredibly responsive. Such an unforgettable experience. We’d absolutely stay again. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Compass Points (Insider Tips)

  • remote location, but waking up to water and mountain views feels surreal
  • loved the wildlife sightings
  • hot tub available for an additional fee ($ 2025 rate) – note the water temp wasn’t as hot as expected but it was still a relaxing under the Arctic sky

  • pets are allowed for no extra charge

  • boat had minimal sway at times (I took an anti-nausea medication prophylactically but probably did not need it)
  • the ramp leading to the house can be slippery during snowstorms; a shovel is provided to clear the path
